Customers now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot which business to hire, and those tools answer by quoting a handful of sources. Generative engine optimization (GEO), also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or AI SEO, is the work of making your business one of those sources.

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI assistants read the same web pages search engines do, so a site Google cannot read is a site they cannot quote. What changes is how each page has to answer: directly, specifically, and in agreement with what the rest of the web says about you.

We see this on our own site. Search Console shows our WhatsApp automation guide appearing hundreds of times a month for long, multi-sentence questions of the kind people type into AI assistants. That visibility came from answering specific questions plainly, and it is the same approach we take for clients.

How AI assistants choose what to cite

Each assistant works a little differently, but the pattern is similar. The tool searches the web or its own index, reads a few pages, and writes an answer from the ones that state the facts most clearly. A page that answers the question in its first lines, names the business and place plainly, and agrees with other sources is easier to quote than one that buries the answer under a sales pitch.

Google says its AI features rely on the same fundamentals as search: pages it can find, read and understand. See its guidance on AI features in Search.

What the work includes

Five areas we work on together
AreaWhat we do
AccessCheck that AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are allowed to read your site, and that the important text is on the page rather than loaded later by scripts.
AnswersRewrite service and FAQ pages so the first lines answer the question a buyer asks, with areas, hours, process and any prices you publish stated plainly.
ConsistencyMake your business name, address, services and people match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
MentionsEarn mentions on sources assistants already trust, such as industry directories, local press, partner sites and reviews. We never use paid link schemes.
MeasurementTrack visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini in your analytics, and test a fixed set of buyer questions each month to see which sources the assistants cite.

What the first month covers

  • A check of what each assistant can read on your site today.
  • A list of the questions your buyers ask, taken from your search data, sales calls, reviews and support messages.
  • Rewrites of the pages that should answer the most valuable of those questions.
  • A starting record of which sources the assistants cite for those questions, so later months have something to compare against.

What no one can promise

No agency controls which sources an AI assistant cites, and the answers change from one week to the next. We do not sell special markup for AI answers, because Google says none is required, and we do not fill a site with thin question-and-answer pages. We commit to the work, a monthly report and a plain explanation of what changed.

GEO and SEO together

Most of this work improves ordinary search results too, and the reverse holds: if Google cannot read your site, no assistant will quote it either. Where a site has deeper technical problems, we fix those first through our SEO services. Law firms and med spas have sector rules on what a page may claim, covered by our law firm SEO and med spa SEO work.

Questions about AI search optimization

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to find, understand and cite when they answer a question. It covers what assistants can read on your site, how clearly your pages answer questions and what other sources say about you.

It overlaps heavily. Both need pages that can be read and that answer real questions. GEO puts more weight on direct answers, consistent business details across the web and mentions from trusted sources, because assistants quote passages rather than list ten links.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is another name for the same goal: being the answer an AI assistant or a search feature quotes. Some people use AEO for featured answers in Google and GEO for AI assistants, but the work is largely the same.

Three ways: visits that analytics records from AI assistants, a monthly test of the same buyer questions to see which sources get cited, and the longer, conversational searches that start to appear in your search data.

No one can guarantee that. We can make your business easier to find, understand and cite, which raises the chance of being included, and we report honestly on whether it happens.

Fixing what assistants can read can take days. Changes in citations usually take weeks to months, because assistants have to find and re-read the updated pages, and some answers change regardless of what any one business does.

It costs little to add, but there is no public evidence that it changes which sources the main assistants cite. We add one where it is cheap and do not build a plan around it.
